Vijayanagara: The State Government has banned the Devadasi system long back. However, a family in Joladakudligi Village in Kottur Taluk of Vijayanagar District converted a male member of the family into “Dasappa” (male Devadasi) to continue the tradition.
This incident was held on April 18. However, it came to light very late as the ritual was carried out in secrecy.
15 years ago, his grandmother, who was a rehabilitated Devadasi passed away. To continue this tradition, this 22-year-old youth has now become Dasappa.
According to locals, even though the youth has turned Dasappa and started spiritual life, he can get married.
According to the locals, the family of the youth spent Rs.25,000 on the rituals. The priest who converted the youth into Dasappa, had converted 10 youths into Dasapppa last year.
After the State Government banned the Devadasi system, men getting converted into Dasappa is the latest development. It mostly prevails among the socially weaker and backward castes of the society.
