Bengaluru: KPCC president DK Shivakumar urged the government on Tuesday, May 12, to extend the term of the panchayat members for six more months as it is not possible to conduct elections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

DKShi informed that the term of the panchayats will be ending on May 24.

“We request the government to extend the term of the panchayat members for six more months as we are not in a position to conduct elections,” he said, as per a report by ANI.

Criticising the government on several issues, including their handling of the migrant labourers, DKShi demanded that the state release a white paper regarding their policies.

“The BJP government in Karnataka is playing politics with groceries and food products’ distribution by using their party symbol. The state government has not been distributing groceries to those who deserve it. They don’t have the proper details about how much food and groceries need to be distributed and to whom,” he said.

He also attacked the government for its proposed legislation regarding the labour law and Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC).

He accused the government of making a blueprint to dilute the labour law and bring the PAMC Bill that will hurt the farmers.

“We will not accept this and will not allow it to come into existence. We will protest against these issues,” he said.
