While Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers rallied in protest over the attack of a shopkeeper in Bengaluru, allegedly for playing Hanuman Chalisa, Bengaluru police detained MPs Shobha Karandlaje and Tejasvi Surya. Protests and demands for justice have been fierce in response to the incident, which happened close to the Halasuru Gate Police Station.

At a protest led by Hanuman devotees at the attack site in Nagartpet, Bengaluru, there was a fight between protestors and police, which resulted in the police forbidding the assembly. In the confusion, Mukesh, the owner of the shop that was attacked, was also connected to the protest and taken into custody.

The uproar unfolded following an altercation between Mukesh, owner of a mobile shop, and a group of men who allegedly objected to the playing of Hanuman Chalisa during a namaz, near his shop. According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated when Mukesh resisted the demands of the young men, prompting them to forcibly remove him from his shop and subject him to physical assault.

The incident was investigated quickly by Halasuru Gate Police Station, which examined CCTV footage from the scene and detained a number of young men who were allegedly involved in the assault. The attack, which took place in Siddanna Galli, Nagarpete, on a Sunday night, has sparked new discussions. The incident’s aftermath, however, took a political turn when BJP employees organized a protest, calling for Mukesh’s justice and condemning what they saw as an assault on Hindu sentiments. BJP leader Suresh Kumar, who had attended the rally, became more tense.

Amidst the chaos, MP Shobha Karandlaje and MP Tejasvi Surya’s detention by the police further fueled the outcry, with party supporters condemning the actions of the authorities and calling for immediate release.
