Bengaluru :Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued a stern warning against the practice of manual scavenging in the state, emphasizing the enforcement of strict legal measures.

His remarks came during the inauguration of a program aimed at rehabilitating and providing subsidies to identified manual scavengers. Each recipient received a subsidy of ₹40,000.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring dignity for civic workers, Siddaramaiah recalled his initiative to increase the salary of Safai Karmacharis from ₹7,000 to ₹17,000 when he first assumed office as Chief Minister.

He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards manual scavenging and cautioned of legal consequences for those involved in such practices.

Underlining the government’s efforts to support marginalized communities, Siddaramaiah mentioned the implementation of a scheme offering ₹7.5 lakh assistance for housing construction workers, attributing these initiatives to his tenure as Chief Minister.

Expressing gratitude towards Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for his role in drafting the Constitution, Siddaramaiah acknowledged the pivotal role of the Constitution in shaping his political journey. He urged citizens to stand united against those who oppose the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

The event, organized by the Social Welfare Department and Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Development Corporation, was attended by Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa, along with MLAs Narendraswamy, Basantappa, and Srinivas. Over 4,000 Safai Karmacharis received financial assistance during the convention.
