Bengaluru: The ongoing debate over the hijab issue in Karnataka has intensified. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara states that the government will carefully consider the matter before making any decisions.
“We have not made any orders regarding hijab. CM Siddaramaiah said that even if it is done, we will check it. The government will decide after looking into it deeply,” Parameshwara said.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader KT Rama Rao criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government, pointing out that the Siddaramaiah government has not yet lifted the hijab ban in the state, and they are still contemplating their stance.
“They have not lifted the ban on hijab yet, and the CM has said they are thinking about it. People are seeing the behavior of Congress—what they say before coming to power and how they change after getting power,” KTR expressed.
The hijab issue regained prominence after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the government’s intention to lift the ban on hijab imposed by the previous BJP government.
“We are thinking of withdrawing the decision (of hijab ban). We will discuss it. I have said this in response to a question. We have not done it yet,” clarified the Chief Minister.
Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accused Siddaramaiah of using the hijab issue for political gains and diverting attention from the failures of his government.
He emphasized that the hijab was not banned statewide but not allowed where there was a dress code. Bommai pointed out that Muslim women are permitted to wear the hijab everywhere and questioned the need to lift a ban that doesn’t exist in the state.
