Karnataka's Free Bus Ride Scheme Empowers Women And Strengthens Family Ties

A recent study conducted by the JustJobs Network and the Fiscal Policy Institute reveals the profound social and economic impact of Karnataka’s free bus ride scheme, part of the five guarantees introduced by the Congress government in mid-2023. The study, based on a sample survey of 786 women across various districts, highlights how women are leveraging the scheme to enhance family connections, undertake pilgrimages, and enjoy leisure outings that were once considered luxuries.

Empowering Women Through Accessibility

The Shakti scheme has not only increased government bus traffic by 7% but has also resulted in significant monthly savings per family, amounting to Rs 1,326 in Bengaluru. Beyond commuting, women are using buses for household chores, errands, and accessing affordable medical care in nearby towns and cities.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite the benefits, women face challenges such as rude behavior from male passengers, longer wait times, and overcrowding. However, they are resilient, with more women opting for alternative modes of public transport post-implementation, including trains and the Metro, indicating a shift in transportation preferences.

Impact on Marginalized Communities

The study highlights that the Shakti scheme has had a significant impact on marginalized communities, with the OBC population benefiting the most, followed by the SC community. While private buses remain reliable in certain districts due to better connectivity, the scheme has democratized transportation access for many.

Moving Towards Inclusive Mobility

As Karnataka’s free bus ride scheme continues to empower women and strengthen family ties, there is a growing recognition of the need for inclusive mobility solutions that address the diverse needs of commuters across the state.
