Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), operated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), has reached a significant environmental milestone by becoming the first airport in Asia to receive Airports Council International’s (ACI) highest Level five accreditation. This achievement, effective from May 5, 2024, recognizes the airport’s exceptional efforts in reducing its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
BLR Airport has achieved a remarkable 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, reaching this target seven years ahead of the 2030 deadline. This reduction represents the highest level of emission cutback accomplished by any Indian airport. The airport has transitioned to 100% renewable electricity and implemented various sustainable practices, including green infrastructure and mobility initiatives.
To offset its remaining emissions, BLR Airport has invested in ACI-approved carbon removal projects. The airport’s future plans include offsetting residual emissions through in-house green landscape projects, further underscoring its commitment to sustainability.
Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of BIAL, praised the airport’s accomplishments, stating, “Achieving Net Zero GHG Emissions seven years ahead of our target is a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainability. This milestone not only sets a new benchmark for us but also reinforces our dedication to a greener future.”
Looking ahead, BLR Airport aims to achieve Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050, aligning with ACI’s stringent standards and encompassing all Scope three emissions.
