Bengaluru: A bail plea of a woman who is accused in a multi-crore scam, was rejected by a City Civil and Sessions Court, on the ground that merely being a woman is not sufficient to secure bail.
The accused in the case Bharathi(35), wife of B S Padmanabhachar was arrested recently when she returned to India after two years. The couple who used to run the Lord Venkateshwara Cooperative Society in Malleswaram had duped people of more than Rs 25 crore after collecting money in the form of deposits, promising higher interest rate. Then they fled to Dubai with family members in 2014 after investors demanded repayment. The cheques the couple had issued were dishonoured.
The accused in her bail plea contended that she was falsely implicated in the case and had approached the court seeking bail. Judge Joshi Venkatesh said that the contention of Bharathi that she has to look after her children and mother has no force at all because her children and her husband had already fled abroad. However, the plea was rejected by the court.
Initially, a case was registered by Malleswaram police in 2015 and it was later transferred to the Central Crime Branch.
