Bengaluru: A number of schools run by the Department of Social Welfare will be renamed in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution. The decision has come after a recent government order.
According to sources, the residential schools, which number about 68, host students of Classes 1 to 5, who come from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe backgrounds.
The Constitution provides special protection for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, as well as other weaker sections of society, so that they can take their rightful place in society. As a result, constitutional experts believe that naming the schools after Ambedkar is a wise decision.
The decision is a result of a letter from Social Welfare Commissioner Dr. Ravikumar Surpur to the State Government on October 25.
The letter asked the government to change the names of the department’s residential schools to “Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Residential School.”
A formal government order was recently passed after the letter was reviewed. The decision to rename the schools after Ambedkar was made on January 1. According to the letter, the schools educate a total of 8,500 children, with 25 students per class.
