Bengaluru: Two young women, who had been on an outing to Chunchi Falls with their colleagues, were washed away in Arkavathi river in Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagara district on Sunday, May 17, afternoon.
The other five were stuck on a rock in the middle of the river. Despite heavy rain, constantly rising water level in the river and bad light, the police and fire department personnel rescued them around 11 pm, using coracles and with the help of expert swimmers. The police said the eight were employees of HGS, a private firm in Bengaluru.

We received a message in the afternoon that two women were washed away in the Arkavathi, and rushed to the spot. But still we have not been able to trace the bodies as it is raining heavily and the water level is constantly rising. We will resume the operations around 7 am on Monday, a senior police officer said.

The jurisdictional police, fire department, teams from the forest department and locals struggled for hours to rescue the six stranded tourists. The rescue teams camped on either side of the river to rescue them.

Chunchi Falls is about 90 km from Bengaluru, and is on the way to Mekedatu to Sangama.
