Bengaluru: A neighbour narrowly escaped death after a house collapsed in a devastating explosion in the city, leaving multiple kitchens completely destroyed and causing injuries to those nearby. The incident took place when Sudha Rani’s mother, Kanchana, stepped out of her kitchen to fetch water, a move that ultimately saved her life.

Explosion destroys multiple kitchens

According to reports, three kitchens located directly behind the collapsed house were severely damaged. Debris from the explosion crushed two kitchens entirely, while the third sustained partial damage. Sudha Rani, daughter of the injured Kanchana, recounted the terrifying moments. “I thought it was a cooker blast and rushed into the kitchen seconds after I heard the noise. My mother’s kitchen had already collapsed, and I couldn’t find her. I started searching and could see her hand near the water tank area. I rushed to remove her and sent her to the hospital in an auto,” she said.

Injuries and aftermath

Kanchana sustained injuries from the debris but regained consciousness at the hospital, giving her daughter a moment of relief amid the chaos. Sudha Rani, a single mother and the only earning member of her family, also faced the destruction of her own kitchen. She expressed her anguish, stating, “I lost my husband, and I am taking care of my two kids. This house was given to me by my parents — it was the only hope of my life. While my kitchen is fully gone, I am just happy because my mom is alive.”

Community reaction and safety concerns

The incident has raised concerns about the structural safety of old residential units and the risk posed by makeshift kitchens in densely populated neighbourhoods. Neighbours and local authorities are examining the site to determine the cause of the explosion and to prevent similar accidents in the future. Residents emphasised the importance of emergency preparedness and awareness of hazards in their homes.

Conclusion

While the material losses are significant, the fortunate escape of Kanchana underscores the importance of vigilance and quick thinking during sudden accidents. Authorities are urging residents to take preventive measures and inspect their homes regularly to avoid further tragedies.
