Bhatkal: In a freak incident, a KSRTC Volvo bus conductor died on the spot after he was impaled by a tree branch while on the way to a depot here on Sagar road, Bhatkal, on Thursday, November 15 night.
The deceased has been identified as Panchaiah Matapati (35), a resident of Belagavi.
As per sources, the bus was plying from Mangaluru and was on its way to the Bhatkal depot, when the branch of a banyan tree pierced into the bus from the top right corner and impaled Panchaiah, who was seated in the front seat near the door. The driver, however, escaped the deadly branch by a few inches.
Panchaiah succumbed to his injuries and was taken to a government hospital in Bhatkal for post-mortem.
