Mangaluru: The Akhila Bharata Beary Mahasabha has called upon the state government to establish a development corporation for the welfare of the Beary community, which consists of over 25 lakh members from Karnataka and beyond. Speaking at a press conference, Mahasabha President Abdul Azeez Baikampady emphasized the need for the Karnataka Beary Development Corporation to uplift the community educationally, socially, and economically.
Baikampady urged the government to allocate a minimum of Rs 200 crore for the corporation in the upcoming budget. The Mahasabha delegation has already met with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Speaker UT Khader, submitting a memorandum outlining their demand. Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have expressed a willingness to consider the request.
Highlighting the Dravidian origin of the Beary community and the linguistic similarities with Tamil, Baikampady argued that establishing a development corporation is crucial for the community’s progress. Currently categorized under the minority label, which includes various communities, the Beary community faces challenges in effectively accessing funds allocated for minorities, hindering their educational, employment, and housing opportunities.
Baikampady stressed that the establishment of a dedicated Beary Development Corporation would ensure social justice and address the specific needs of the community, promoting their overall well-being.
