Mangaluru: City based NGO Anti Pollution Drive Foundation (APD) has submitted a memorandum to the State Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology and Dakshin Kannada District In-charge B Ramanath Rai, calling for quick and effective implementation of central government’s new solid waste management in Mangaluru.
An APD delegation comprising Ramesh, Rasmiya Sheik and Asif met the minister in the city on recently and briefed him on the matter. “The minister assured them that a meeting of city corporation will be convened immediately”, said APD Founder Abdullah A. Rehman.
According to the new rules waste segregation into “dry, wet, others” must be done right at the source of waste generation like homes or commercial premises. The waste thus segregated may not be disposed recklessly and must be given to the authorised waste collection vehicle visiting from time to time.
The new rules are required to be implemented in Mangalore City Corporation jurisdiction within June 2016. Even in smaller towns and municipalities waste management must be done in a scientific manner. The new rules have given more importance to waste segregation. APD Foundation has submitted the memorandum to the minister mainly because the implementation of the new rules requires effective administrative response.
Waste disposal is a huge problem in urban and semi urban areas. Though the central government has enacted new rules for the disposal of solid waste and e-waste, people are lagging behind in implementation.
The minister assured the APD delegation that a meeting of senior officers will be convened in Bangalore and Mangalore to discuss progress in the implementation of plastic ban and solid waste management in the state.
