Mangaluru: The first consignment of tender areca nuts was exported to China by Puttur based areca company CAMPCO. The agreement was made earlier by China-based company “Kou Wei Wang” with CAMPCO to export areca nuts after quality check.
On Thursday, November 25, the first shipment of tender areca nuts was dispatched to China from Chennai Port. “Kou Wei Wang” (meaning King of Taste) is a Chinese mouth freshener company which sent their representatives to check the quality of areca nuts in grown in India. After a brief verification by the Chinese team, they approached CAMPCO for their areca nuts.
A team of representatives from CAMPCO had earlier visited China to seal the deal. After a trial shipment made by CAMPCO, Kou Wei Wang gave them a green signal and asked them to send more shipments in larger quantities. To maintain standards, experts chose tender areca nuts grown in Shivamogga, Coimbatore and Puttur which are processed at CAMPCO plant in Puttur before export.
It is to be recalled that in the years 2003 and 2004, CAMPCO had exported areca nuts to Pakistan for their domestic consumption. But due to logistical impediments, the export was stopped. The Chinese deal however is expected to improve the demand of local areca nut growers.
