In a successful endeavor, Dakshina Kannada district achieved a commendable 95.1% of the target in the pulse polio drive, administering drops to 1,36,280 out of 1,43,252 children below the age of five on a designated Sunday. The drive spanned across the entire district, with Corporator Poornima inaugurating the district-level pulse polio drive at the Lady Goschen Hospital.
District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Thimmaiah HR, prior to the drive, mentioned that the goal was to provide polio drops to 98,762 children in rural areas and 44,580 in urban areas. To facilitate this massive effort, the health department set up 921 booths, four mobile booths, and 37 transit teams strategically positioned at bus stands, railway stations, and the airport.
The deployment included 3,840 vaccinators, 183 supervisors, as well as enthusiastic volunteers contributing to the drive. Dr. Thimmaiah HR explained the meticulous planning, with 1,650 teams for non-high-risk areas and 298 teams for high-risk areas. While celebrating India’s polio-free status, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance, citing the presence of polio in neighboring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan. The vaccination drive remains crucial to safeguarding children from potential outbreaks and ensuring the district’s ongoing commitment to polio prevention.
