Mangaluru: The existing system of water rationing is likely to be withdrawn as Deputy Commissioner of the district has asked authorities at the AMR dam to release water to Thumbe vented dam. The decision of withdrawing the water rationing will be taken observing the availability of water in the same on release of water from AMR dam.
MLAs Dr Bharath Shetty, D Vedavyas Kamath and some corporators from the BJP met Deputy Commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil on Tuesday, April 23 and asked to withdraw water rationing system stating that there was enough water in the vented dam to supply water to the city for 30 days.
Responding to it, Sasikanth Senthil informed that he has already asked AMR to release water to Thumbe vented dam and based on the availability of water, the decision on stop rationing of water can be taken from Wednesday, April 24.
Senthil informed that water rationing was started from April 18, so as to meet the needs of drinking water after May 15. If the region does not receive rain till May 15, then the city would be in trouble.
“However, if the water storage shoots above six meters after the release of the water from AMR dam, we will take the decision of stopping the water rationing”, he informed.
Meanwhile, both MLAs Dr Bharath Shetty and Vedavyas Kamath asked to provide water for elevation areas through tankers and to find alternative water sources like open wells, borewells among others. The stormwater drain and small culverts should be desilted immediately to prevent flood during the rainy season, they informed.
Saskinath Senthil assured of taking all appropriate measures to solving the drinking water problems. “I have instructed the officials to respond quickly to the problems pertaining to the drinking water. Measures were already taken to desilt open wells and stormwater drain”, he added.
The water rationing system at present ensures supplying water for four days and stopping water supply for two days. The pattern has evoked sharp criticism from various quarters.
