District administration gears up to make Mangaluru a ‘Smart city’

Mangaluru: The coastal city is one among the six places from Karnataka chosen for the union government’s ambitious Smart City Mission, and in order to strategize it better, the district administration held a meeting here at the DC office on Friday, September 18.

Among the 100, twenty cities will be chosen by the end of this year in the first lot to receive central funding of Rs 500 crore spread over the next five years. In the next two years, 40 cities each will be selected for the funding.

District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai chaired the meeting along with delegates – Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D’Souza, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, Mayor Jacintha Alfred, consultancy team appointed by the union government and officials of MCC.

During the meeting, the district administration aimed at being one among the 20 cities, which has to be sent to the central government before December. For this, Rai advised to form a task force to oversee the proposal.

MLA J R Lobo asked the officials to highlight the important factors of Mangaluru. The DC directed the officials to prepare the project report by the end of October.
