Mangaluru: The Vana Charitable Trust, in collaboration with St Aloysius college in Mangalore has finally seen the need to do something about its beaches that often get littered with footwear of people by launching what they now announce to be the ‘hejje’ campaign.
Beaches here are often polluted as a result of thrash that people carelessly let into the water. These include bottles and other plastic items besides footwear.
However, beach cleanup activities have always shown how footwear makes up for about 40 percent of all the garbage on the shore.
This is further evident from the fact that the drive, being a recent one, has still collected an overall of 5000 pairs of footwear, which are right now, being sorted out by the team.
The campaign will hopefully make our beaches cleaner, giving visitors a pleasant path to walk on while at the same time reaching out to the poor masses out there by providing them with the footwear they need.
The campaign aims to collect all kinds of footwear, new as well as those that have been used. The footwear will either be recycled or repaired, depending on the condition they are in when found, irrespective of their size or style, after which it will be distributed among civic workers, orphans and those in need.
It is with this in mind that the campaign aims to come up with a lakh pairs before it comes to an end in March. And for this, it seeks the help of educational institutions and other religious establishments, requesting that they too come forward with their assistance and help.
The team has even gone to the extent of arranging collection centers at St Aloysius College, the Vana Charitable Trust and finally the CFAL in Bejai, where people can now drop in footwear that they found abandoned in any part of the town.
