Hospital dumps bio-medical waste in residential area

Mangaluru: Residents of Silva Road, Falnir,  near the under construction apartment complex, claimed that discarded bandages, syringes and other bio-waste have been dumped by an unidentified hospital from the vicinity.
hospital_dumpJeevan, a resident,  said, “Bio-waste has been dumped here not the first time, in the past as well, such bio-waste has been dumped here. The local authorities need to take some action on it.”

He said that usually some people late at night come and dump this dangerous waste on the street side and late in the morning the MCC pick – vehicle cleans it up.

Earlier we were not able to take photos of it thus never had an evidence to prove, however this time the photos will speak for themselves, said another furious resident. Locals say that there are two prominent hospitals in the area however they is not sure which of them is the culprit.

Abdul Ravoof, the corporator, when contacted by Newskarnatka, said, “the place where the garbage is dumped was an empty site before, however now there is some construction work going on and the builder has barricaded the ground. Now they dump it on the road side”.

When asked which hospital might have done that this, the corporator said, “while that there are two hospitals in the area, there is  only one hospital in  my ward, and they call us whenever there is a disposal to be done and the vehicle is sent to the hospital itself”.

The Corporator promised to look into the issue immediately with all seriousness. “If found which hospital is behind this, notice or strict warning will be issued, and I will go right now and sort out the issue”.

Bio-waste is medical waste that is  hazardous  to human well being, and can lead to several diseases, including lung infections and severe skin allergies, say experts.

As per the directions the High Court of Karnataka, the Karnataka Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has been given the responsibility to ensure that bio-medical waste is scientifically and systematically disposed of, however it seems like nothing much has been done in this case. The Bio Medical Waste (Management and Handling Rules) 1998 dated 20th July 1998 are very stringent in this regard.
