Mangaluru: The most awaited election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Mangaluru City Corporation was held on Friday September 9. Jayanand Anchan was elected as Mayor and Poornima as Deputy Mayor.
While Anchan competed from the BJP, Shashidhar Hegde from Congress was another contestant. Similarly, while it was Poornima from BJP Zeenat Shamshuddin was Deputy Mayor candidate from Congress.
In the mayoral and deputy mayor elections, BJP candidates got 46 votes while Congress candidates got 14 votes.
It can be recalled here that Mayor’s post is reserved for the General Category and the Deputy Mayor’s post is reserved for a woman from the Backward Class. With Assembly Elections due next year, there were discussions on political experience, full control over the Mahanagara Palike and making a candidate who runs with full dedication during the elections as Mayor.
Though the Mayor-Deputy Mayor election was scheduled for March this year, the election was also put on hold due to reservation issues elsewhere.
