Mangaluru: The Bunder Police on Saturday March 25 arrested two people who were engaged in street vending and later released them.

Abdul Khalid and Mohammad Riyaz, who were street vendors near Maidan, were arrested by the Bunder Police along with their pushcart. Those who arrested were street vendors approved by the Town Trade Committee of the Metropolitan Municipality. On hearing about the incident, the Street Vendors’ Association Honorary President and DYFI Dakshina Kannada District President B. K. Imtiyaz, it is learnt that the two arrested were released after office-bearers of the association threatened to protest against the police brutality.

The leaders of the association, who were adamant that they would take out a procession with the released street vendors to ground road and where they do business at the same place, resumed their business and the poor street vendors in the City would be booked for arrest if they did business for their livelihood. Street vendors expressed displeasure that if the rich hold a food festival on the streets, the roads would be closed and vehicles blocked and those dumping garbage on the road were being allowed to dump garbage on the road under police protection.
