Mangaluru: In a commendable recognition, Maimoona and her daughter Marzina Rajkamal, dedicated dairy farmers from Harekala in Ullal taluk, have been chosen for the Mangaluru Press Club Award for the year 2023-24. The prestigious award will be presented to them on Press Club Day, scheduled for March 10.

Despite the trend of shifting away from dairy farming, Maimoona and Marzina have not only persisted but thrived in their endeavors. Managing a herd of over 70 cows, including 40 milking ones, the duo sells an impressive 300 to 320 liters of milk daily, showcasing their commitment to the profession.

Maimoona, the wife of the late Abul Mazeed Rajkamal, faced challenges after her husband’s demise in 2009. Initially selling cows and goats owned by the family, she turned to selling biryani to sustain their livelihood. Encouraged by her daughter Marzina, a software engineer, Maimoona returned to dairy farming, starting with the purchase of a single cow.

Overcoming setbacks, including the loss of four cows, the mother-daughter duo persevered and now employs five laborers to assist them in their daily operations. Rising at 4 a.m., they dedicate two hours to milking the cows in their shed.

Beyond their dedication to dairy farming, Maimoona and Marzina contribute to various social causes. They allocate profits for the marriages of underprivileged girls, support destitutes and old-age homes, and engage in other charitable activities, irrespective of the recipients’ religious background.

Their commitment extends to the welfare of Kannada-medium schools, with donations made to the Harekala Gram Panchayat for necessary materials. The duo, with aspirations to rear 101 cows, is also involved in poultry and goat farming and has cultivated fruits on their Mazeed farm.

A two-member committee recognized the remarkable contributions of Maimoona and Marzina Rajkamal, making them deserving recipients of the Mangaluru Press Club Award for 2023-24.
