Mangaluru: Due to utter negligence of the state government, the number cattle lifting of cases have been increasing in the recent days and this would lead to violence in the district, Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel has alleged.

Speaking to the reporters at the district BJP office on Saturday, June 29, Nalin said that when BJP government was in power, it had managed to bring in stringent laws in order to protect the cattle. However, when the Congress government came to power, it reversed the BJP’s decision which helped the cattle lifters to continue their business. If the government does not the take precautionary measures to prevent incidents of cattle theft, it will pave way for violence in the district, he said and added that BJP was ready to take all the initiatives to protect cattle.

Listing out the various demands to prevent illegal cattle transportation, Nalin said, “A comprehensive drive should be taken up in order to shut all illegal slaughterhouses operating throughout the district. CCTV cameras also should be installed at key points in the district. For proper implementation of the existing law on cow protection, a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) should be formed. The lone slaughterhouse, located at Kudroli should be shifted to the outskirts of the city. If the incidents of cattle theft occur, the government should fix compensation from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 Lakh for those who lose their cattle.”

Nalin also urged to set up special check-posts in the border areas of Karnataka and Kerala in order to check illegal transportation of cattle. Meanwhile, he assured that if the BJP secured power in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), it would definitely take measures to shift Kudroli slaughterhouse to another location.

Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, BJP District General Secretary Capt. Brijesh Chowta among others were present.
