The world of theatre and cinema mourns the loss of Venugopal T Kotian, affectionately known as V G Pal, who breathed his last on Wednesday at a private hospital in the city after battling illness. He was 82 years old.
A Legacy in Theatre and Cinema
V G Pal’s remarkable career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on Tulu theatre and Kannada cinema. His journey in acting commenced in 1961 with the Tulu play ‘Kalchigada Kurukshetra’, leading to over 2000 performances across social, historical, and epic dramas. Additionally, he lent his voice to over 50 recordings. In Kannada cinema, his notable roles in films like Mahanadi and Jeevanmukhi garnered him recognition. Pal’s contributions to Tulu cinema were equally significant, with memorable performances in films such as Bhagyavanthedi, Bayyamallige, Bangar Patler, Sathya Olundu, Tudar, and Maribale.
A Life of Service and Artistry
Before achieving fame in the artistic realm, Pal pursued education in ITI and served as a senior technical assistant in the Fisheries department until his retirement in 2000. Alongside his artistic pursuits, he received numerous accolades, including awards from the Tulu Sahitya Academy and the Karnataka Nataka Academy. His autobiography, ‘Pal Kadal,’ was a testament to his life’s journey, released during the celebration of his platinum birthday.
Family and Farewell
Born to Thaniyappa Kotian and Seethamma, Pal is survived by his wife Susheela, two sons, and one daughter. Family sources have announced that his mortal remains will be brought to his residence in Bokkapatna at 10 am on Thursday from Yenepoya Hospital, allowing the public to pay their respects.
