Mangaluru: City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar, informed on Friday March 5 that seven students were arrested in two separate cases of ragging in the city.
Among the seven, four were arrested for ragging junior students at private college in Mukka. The arrested are K U Shameel (22) from Mukka, Mohammed Bazil (22) from Baikampady, Sambhram Alva (20) from Mulky and Ashwith N Johnson (21) from Kalpane. All are engineering students of different streams.
Speaking at a press meet, Shashi Kumar said that the accused had threatened, abused and behaved in an inhuman manner with the junior students. “On February 26, the issue was taken up in the anti-ragging committee of the college and the accused were proved guilty. Thereafter, accused Shameel, Bazil and Sambhram threatened and assaulted a lecturer after an argument. On March 3, the college dean filed a police complaint regarding four senior students ragging first year students,” he stated.
The other three students were arrested in connection to an incident of ragging under Kankanady station limits. They are identified as Mohammed Adil (20) and Mohammed Nizammudin (20) from Kannur, and Mohammed Riyaz (20) from Calicut.
Shashi Kumar said that the concerned authorities of the educational institutions must take necessary measures against ragging.
