Mangaluru: In a heartbreaking incident, the bodies of Nagaraj (24) and Milan (20), who drowned at Panambur beach on Sunday evening, March 3, were recovered on Monday. The victims, residents of Porkody Ambedkar Nagar Colony, were part of a group of friends who had visited the beach for leisure.

The incident unfolded as Likit (18), a first-year PU student, was swept away by the sea initially. Milan (20) tried to rescue him, but both succumbed to the waves. In a tragic turn of events, Nagaraj (24) went to save them but also lost his life in the process. Punit and Manoj, the other two friends, managed to stay in shallow waters and survived.

Likit, whose exams had recently concluded, had plans to work as a temporary postman during the upcoming summer break to save money for college fees. As the only son of Rani and Manikanta, he aspired to become a policeman.

Milan, who resided with his elder brother Mohan, had recently completed his second PU at a private college, and their new house was under construction.

Nagaraj, the youngest among nine children of Phakirappa and Anumavva, was a second PU arts student known for his swimming expertise.

The survivors include Manoj, a nephew of the deceased Nagaraj and a worker in Kuntikan, and Puneet, a second-year engineering student.

Panambur beach witnessed violent waves, leading the beach tourism organization to temporarily suspend water sports activities. Despite lifeguards’ warnings and a siren alert on Sunday evening, the three youths ventured into deep waters.

With the approaching summer holidays expected to bring an influx of tourists, concerns about beach safety are mounting. The district administration is urged to enhance beach infrastructure to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
