In a proactive move, Tulu theatre, cinema, and Yakshagana artists joined forces to present a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan, emphasizing the need for creating a supportive environment for artists to freely present their work. The memorandum, submitted by the Tulu Nataka Kalavidara Okkoota (Federation Tulu Theatre Artists), highlighted concerns regarding recent threats aimed at obstructing their performances and screenings.

Dakshina Kannada boasts a vibrant cultural scene with over 40 theatre troupes comprising approximately 1,700 artists. These troupes stage between 10 to 20 shows per month, contributing significantly to local entertainment and providing livelihoods for numerous families.

The federation raised alarm over the actions of certain individuals who claim to be guardians of “daivaradhane” (divine worship) and have resorted to threats via social media platforms, vowing to disrupt any plays or films related to this spiritual practice. They allege that theatre artists have been disrespectful towards “daivaradhane” in their performances.

Rejecting these claims, the Okkoota asserted that “daivaradhane” is a spiritual tradition belonging to all, and no one can monopolize or dictate its portrayal on stage. They emphasized that their performances have always upheld the sanctity of “daivaradhane” and have aimed to promote it with reverence.

The federation called upon the district administration to ensure the safety of theatre troupes during performances and film screenings, urging the police to provide necessary security measures. They emphasized the importance of safeguarding artistic freedom against any interference from self-appointed protectors.

The memorandum was supported by various cultural organizations, including the Jilla Ranga Samillana Vedike of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod districts, Coastalwood Artists and Technicians Federation, and Karavali Cinema and Yakshagana Artists.
