Mangaluru: Patients battling for life on 20 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, more number waiting for ICU beds at the entrance associated with helpless administrative staff paint a grim picture at the government Wenlock hospital in the heart of the city.
The pathetic state of the 167-year-old building exposes the outer condition while the sorry inner state of affair is reflected in the innumerable patients pouring in seeking healing touch from eight different districts, which include the ones redirected from nearby district hospitals of southern Karnataka. With three lakh out-patients every year and 30,000 in-patients to go along, Wenlock hospital has only 1000 beds to cater.
With no support from the state government to the hospital in terms of financial aid it appears the hospital itself is in the Intensive Care Unit. If no action is taken to revive the collapsing structure and infrastructure the hopes of of survival for patients will diminish even before they enter the ICU.
