As the summer season approaches, rural areas in Udupi district are grappling with depleting sources of drinking water due to the increasing temperature and scorching heat. While precautionary measures are being taken, hundreds of villages fear the looming scarcity of drinking water.
A total of 1,427 inhabitants across 203 villages in 130 grama panchayats of the district are anticipated to be affected during the current summer season. Specifically, areas under the jurisdiction of various taluks, including Brahmavar, Kaup, Udupi, Hebri, Karkala, Byndoor, and Kundapura, are expected to face challenges.
To address the issue, authorities have identified over 70 borewells and 25 wells under government and private ownership to provide drinking water to villagers. Additionally, Karkala, Hebri, and Brahmavar taluks have been declared partially drought-hit, with the government allocating grants for urgent drinking water works.
In light of the impending shortage, the public is urged to use drinking water sparingly and responsibly, with emphasis placed on immediate repairs of drinking water pipelines by the local grama panchayats. Private borewells and wells have been identified and hired to mitigate the situation, while strict measures are in place to ensure that public drinking water is not misused for purposes such as gardening or car washing.
Moreover, a 24/7 helpline number has been established at the district level to address complaints regarding drinking water problems in rural areas, offering assistance and support to affected communities.
