A young Dalit advocate, Durgappa Hosamani, was allegedly abused, beaten, and threatened with death by two upper-caste individuals in Nagarala village of Surapura taluk, Yadgir district. The incident triggered widespread anger after a disturbing video of the assault went viral on social media.
Hosamani recounted to Vartha Bharati that the attack took place while he was walking along a road when, without provocation, two men—identified as Mallayya and Arjuna—stopped him, hurled caste-based slurs, and assaulted him. They also allegedly issued death threats.
The viral video shows the lawyer being verbally and physically targeted, prompting condemnation from civil society and legal communities alike.
Based on Hosamani’s complaint, Surapura Police have filed an FIR invoking multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)—including Sections 115(2), 118(1), 126(2), 133, 351, and 352—along with relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
