In a heartbreaking incident, a newly married couple lost their lives in a road accident at Neeralagi Cross in Shiggaon taluk on National Highway 48 early Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Karthik Hugar (34) and Aishwarya Hugar (30), residents of Haveri. The accident occurred at around 5 am when their car rammed into a parked lorry. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled, and police along with fire and emergency services personnel had to struggle to retrieve the bodies.
Couple had sought blessings for a child
Family sources said Karthik had taken his wife, his brother-in-law and a friend to Navalgund to offer prayers to Kamadeva on the occasion of Holi Hunnime. The couple, who were married on February 13, had reportedly sought blessings to be blessed with a child in the coming year.
Karthik was employed at a cooperative society in Haveri. The tragedy has left both families in deep shock.
Two critical, father suffers heart attack
Two others travelling in the car — Mallikarjun and Vinayak — sustained serious injuries and have been admitted to KMC-RI Hospital in Hubballi. Doctors have described their condition as critical.
In a further tragic turn, Aishwarya’s father, who rushed to the accident spot at Neeralagi Cross — her native place — reportedly suffered a heart attack upon seeing the scene. He has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.
The Tadas Police Station has registered a case and is investigating the circumstances leading to the crash.
The incident has once again raised concerns about highway safety and the dangers posed by parked heavy vehicles along national highways.
