Kalaburagi: Farmers protest seeking higher support price for sugarcane

Kalaburagi: Sugarcane growers staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Monday October 31 demanding scientific and better support price for sugarcane. They were stopped by the police and there was a clash after farmers were refused entry into the Mini Vidhana Soudha.

During this time, sugarcane growers made several pleas to the Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai through the Deputy Commissioner but the police stopped them from entering the Mini Vidhana Soudha premises. The sugarcane growers, who were standing in the sun, and shouted slogans against the Government and the police.

This led to a tense situation in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office for sometime. During this time, the police pushed several people. At the same time, there was also an incident where sugarcane growers lost consciousness due to the heat and suffered on the road. The sugarcane growers said that the Government was not responding to their pain even though some people were immediately put in the shade and asked to drink water and get better.

District President Jagdish Patil Kalagi opposed the police action. In a democratic set-up, every common man has the opportunity to ask for his right. However, we sugarcane growers protested peacefully and appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to ensure that the Government listens to our plight. On this occasion, the police stopped us .This is an oppression on Democracy,” he said.

More than 200 farmers from all Taluks of the District participated in the protest.
