Mangaluru/Udupi — With relentless rains disrupting academic schedules in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, the education department has decided to conduct full-day classes on Saturdays starting after August 15 to compensate for the multiple rain-related holidays declared over recent weeks.

The move aims to recover lost instructional time and ensure students are on track academically. In Udupi, where schools in the Byndoor block alone lost eight days, afternoon sessions on Saturdays have already been mandated. Other regions have reported up to seven rain holidays, impacting curriculum completion.

In Dakshina Kannada, seven official rain holidays have been recorded so far, with certain taluks receiving extra days off based on local weather conditions. To bridge this gap, full-day Saturday classes will be rolled out across the district after August 15.

Dakshina Kannada DDPI Govinda Madivala told Udayavani, “The holidays were necessary for student safety. Now, all BEOs have been instructed to prepare for full-day sessions on Saturdays starting mid-August.”

Udupi DDPI Lokesh confirmed, “Instructions have been given for Saturday classes through October. If needed, the directive may be extended depending on further weather disruptions. Sundays will remain holidays.”

The measure reflects the administration’s focus on academic continuity while responding to weather-related safety concerns.
