Mangaluru: In a significant security breach, a surprise inspection at the District Jail in Kodialbail led to the seizure of mobile phones and banned tobacco products on Saturday. The raid was prompted by a recent violent incident within the prison.

The operation was led by ACP Pratap Singh Thorat of the Central Sub-Division, aiming to tighten vigilance and curb rising illegal activities inside the jail.

Officials recovered two smartphones, one keypad mobile, and two bundles of beedis—items strictly banned in the facility. Their presence indicates possible lapses in monitoring and security enforcement.

A case has been filed at Barke Police Station, and an investigation is underway to uncover how the contraband entered the high-security premises. Authorities are also working to identify whether inmates or external parties played a role in the smuggling.

Sources suggest that more frequent and rigorous checks may follow as officials crack down on illicit operations within the prison system.
