Mangaluru: Yet another violent incident has been reported from the District Central Jail in Kodialbail, highlighting ongoing safety concerns within the prison. On Thursday, a physical brawl broke out among inmates, involving well-known criminal Mohammad Mukhtar from Ullal.
Sources indicate that Mukhtar attacked fellow prisoner Keshav during the altercation. Keshav, who sustained serious injuries, was quickly shifted to Wenlock Hospital under police supervision for treatment.
Keshav is currently in custody as one of the accused in the murder of Akshay Kallega, which took place on November 6, 2023. Meanwhile, Mukhtar, a resident of Dharmanagar, Ullal, faces charges in at least 15 criminal cases. He was apprehended in July 2022 following an encounter in which police had to shoot him in the leg to subdue him.
After the fight, officials from the Barke police station registered a case and carried out an inspection at the jail, along with the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
This is not the first time violence has erupted behind bars. A series of recent altercations between inmates has brought the spotlight back on prison administration and its ability to maintain order. Authorities are now under increasing pressure to implement stricter controls and enhance surveillance within the jail.
