Mangaluru: Forest officials have uncovered an illegal wildlife trafficking operation in Mangaluru, arresting four individuals — including the proprietor of a pet store — for attempting to sell an Indian Rock Python disguised as the exotic Burmese Ball Python.
The operation unfolded near Ashwath Katte, Kadri, where 18-year-old Vihal H Shetty of Badaga Ulepady village was caught red-handed during a sting operation.
Pet Shop Involved in Smuggling
Further interrogation led authorities to Petzone, a store in the Statebank area. Its owner, Ibrahim Shakeel Ismail (35), his employee Mohammad Mustaf (22), both from Ullal, and a minor were taken into custody. Officials revealed the snake was advertised on Instagram as an exotic, legal-to-own species to mislead buyers.
RFO Rajesh Baligara explained that the Indian Rock Python is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making its trade strictly prohibited. The accused falsely claimed no permits were required for ownership.
Snake Trafficking from Tamil Nadu
Investigations indicate the illegal operation stretches to Tamil Nadu, where the accused reportedly sourced hatchlings or python eggs to breed and sell. Vihal admitted to purchasing the python for Rs 5,000 from a college-going minor. The shop owner had quoted Rs 45,000, intending to sell it for lakhs once the snake matured.
Digital Evidence and Ongoing Probe
Authorities discovered multiple images and videos of wildlife on the suspect’s mobile, suggesting a broader trafficking network. The operation was conducted under RFO Baligara and is being further investigated by senior officials.
