Mangaluru to Host 23-km Human Chain and Plant 1,000 Saplings
To mark the International Day of Democracy, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will organize a 23-km long human chain and plant 1,000 saplings in the Bengre area on September 15. Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur announced the event, aiming to raise public awareness, especially among the youth, about the significance of democracy. Around 10,000 people, mainly students, are expected to participate in forming the human chain from Pavanje Bridge to the Arkula border, passing through key junctions like Nanthoor and Kannur.
Highlighting the democratic model of India, the mayor praised Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for the Constitution and emphasized the need for youth awareness about its values. The event in Mangaluru is part of a larger state initiative to create a mega human chain from Bidar to Chamarajanagar.
The main program will take place at Kadri Circle near Circuit House, attended by dignitaries such as MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MLAs D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty, and DC Mullai Muhilan. Several locations, including the Pavanje bridge and Kannur Junction, will have special arches, and key spots like the Surathkal Zonal Office will be adorned with tricolors.
Participants can click their photos along the human chain route and upload them to democracydaykarnataka.in to receive a certificate.
