Mangaluru: Relentless overnight rainfall wreaked havoc across Mangaluru and nearby regions on Thursday, triggering landslides, roadblocks, and severe waterlogging, causing widespread disruption to daily life.

In Bejai, a significant landslide blocked major roads, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. Adjacent to the area, a collapsed compound wall crushed several parked two-wheelers, highlighting the rain’s destructive impact.

According to reports by ANI and The Hindu, landslides were also reported near the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway (NH 75), around Mangaluru International Airport, and on George Fernandes Road close to the Circuit House. A major slip near Mannagundi in Kadaba taluk temporarily shut down part of NH 75. One lane was reopened around 10:15 a.m. after emergency debris removal.

Access roads to Mangaluru Airport were also affected. Landslips near the airport welcome arch and Moodukere blocked traffic on the Adyapady-Kaikamba route. Airport staff and fire crews worked to restore connectivity.

Within the city, a slide on George Fernandes Road forced authorities to reroute vehicles through opposite lanes between Bejai Circuit House and Kadri Temple junction. Traffic advisories were issued via WhatsApp urging commuters to avoid congested stretches.

Waterlogging further intensified chaos, especially on Jeppu Kudpady–Jeppinamogaru Road and in basements of commercial spaces in Kottara Chowki.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan inspected key affected locations on Wednesday night. Surathkal recorded the state’s highest rainfall—296.6 mm in 24 hours—followed by Hejamady, Tenka, and several areas in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts reporting over 200 mm.
