Highlighting the abundance of mesopelagic fishes in the Indian Ocean, Meenakumari stressed the importance of dedicated research initiatives to explore their commercial viability. She suggested utilizing existing funding schemes like PM Matsya Sampada Yojana and the National Fisheries Development Board to support such projects.

A Gopalakrishnan, director of ICAR-CMFRI, echoed the need for studies on mesopelagic fishes to formulate recommendations for resource utilization. He emphasized the potential of wax esters found in these species for industries such as cosmetics.

Gopalakrishnan also underscored the importance of exploring additional areas and species amid overexploitation of coastal waters. He emphasized the need for accurate yield estimates and sustainable harvest methods to ensure the long-term viability of mesopelagic fisheries in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone.
