Dr. Gangubai Hangal Varsity to introduce optionals and choice based credit

Mysuru: With a view to give more scope for degree and master degree courses, the Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University will be introducing three optionals instead of single subject for degree and Choice Based Credit System for master degree courses from coming academic year. Apart from this, to give more impetus to all master degrees courses, from the same term, university will be introducing a subject on “Science Technology and Management in Performing Arts” which will be a part of all master degree courses.

Sarvamangala Shankar, Vice Chancellor of the University said, “Though the university is not having the required infrastructural facilities, the students have done well in the recently concluded exams. For the past four to five years, we are demanding for permanent teaching and non-teaching staff but we are not able to get even a single permanent staff which is really unfortunate. We had requested for 15 permanent teaching staff. Though the posts are sanctioned but we are yet to get the orders for the recruitment.”

Talking about the introduction of new optionals and a subject Sarvamangala said, “If the students pursing music learn the technical aspects of music including use of microphone and various other music systems, their dependence on technical experts can be avoided.”

Diploma course in Yakshagana:

Niranjan Vanalli, Registrar of the University who also spoke on the occasion said that Kumta-Honnavar MLA Sharada Mohan Shetty had written a letter to Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy requesting him to start a diploma course in Yakshagana in Honnavar through Music University for which he is ready to provide government land or space. “After getting the request from the minister, we have reacted positively that the university is ready to start diploma course in Yakshagana from coming academic year if there are a minimum of 15 students. We don’t want our university to be restricted to few districts. We want to spread across the state. In days to come, we will be touring North Karnataka to promote the various courses in the university”, added Vanalli.

International Yoga and Music day celebration:

The university will be observing International Yoga and Music Day at Jaganmohan Palace on June 21 from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm. On the occasion, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy will be awarding honorary doctorate to renowned violinist N Rajam at 5.30 pm. MLA M K Somashekar will be releasing books on “Kala Chinthana” and “Shri Purandara Dasara Dhatu Maathu Sahita Keerthanegalu.”

V Ravi Kumar and team will perform Yoga from 8.30 am to 9.30 am. Veereshananda Saraswathi of Ramakrishna Matt will deliver special lecture. Various musical and other performances will be held till evening. Later from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, Rajam will be enthralling the audience with her violin performance.

Music University campus at Sathagalli:

The Karnataka State Dr. Gangubai Hangal Music and Performing Arts University will soon get a new building which will be constructed at Sathagalli on an 8 acre land, which is nearly 8 km away from Mysuru Railway Station. As of now the university is functioning at century-plus Lakshmipuram Government School. The new building will be constructed at a cost of Rs 27 Crore. University will be contributing Rs 12 Crore while Minister Rayareddy has assured to provide Rs 15 Crore. The varsity which was established in 2008-2009, was initially functioning from the MDC Building near Vijayanagar water tank. It was later shifted to the present building.
