Madikeri: Even as Tipu Jayanthi celebration has evoked sharp criticism and opposition in Kodagu, former MLC AK Subbaiah has opined otherwise.

In a press meet on Thursday, the former MLC said that since Tipu Sultan fought the pro-British elements, celebration of his birth anniversary is appropriate and that government must take steps to celebrate the same with all pomp.

Rejecting the theory that Tipu massacred the Kodavas in the Devath Paramb episode, Subbaiah said that the Devath Paramb episode was once raked up by the BJP, but now it has held long silence on the issue of construction of a memorial there.

“The celebration is being opposed by those who want use the issue as a reason to fuel unrest in the society. These are those people who are out to build temples in the name of Godse,” he said adding that last year a man named Kuttappa had died during Tipu Jayanthi celebration and Sangh Parivar is directly responsible for the death. He also held provocative speech of MLA K G Bopaiah responsible for killing of one Shahul Hameed.

“The Sangh Parivar has been the reason behind two deaths in the district over the last two years. This year too the history is going to repeat itself as BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa has already stated that the state will burn if Tipu Jayanthi is celebrated,” he said adding that the communal factions are trying to disturb peace in the name of opposing Tipu Jayanthi.
