Mandya : Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Mandya, a fervent battle for Cauvery water rights has reignited, as farmers and activists unite in protest against the diversion of water to Tamil Nadu. This renewed wave of discontent has swept through the district, with the District Farmers Welfare Committee at the helm, orchestrating a monumental protest near the Visvesvaraya statue. Their outcry stems from the recent directive to release 908 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, a move vehemently opposed by locals.

This resumption of protests underscores the enduring struggle over Cauvery water, a perennial issue in the region. Just months ago, in September, farmers and students alike flooded the streets in a massive demonstration against similar releases of water. The sit-in protest initiated then has persisted, symbolizing the unwavering determination of the community to safeguard their water rights.

Breaking the silence, the District Farmers Welfare Committee now leads a ‘weekly movement’ to intensify opposition against directives from the Central Water Commission (CWRC) and Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). This movement marks the culmination of a 150-day-long sit-in protest, signaling a new phase of resistance against perceived injustices in water distribution.

With solidarity at its core, the Farmers’ Welfare Committee joins the chorus of dissent, echoing the frustration and anger prevalent among locals. Posters condemning the unequal distribution of Cauvery water adorn public spaces, serving as poignant reminders of the ongoing struggle for water sovereignty.

The ‘weekly movement’ is a collective outcry against what many see as a betrayal of the state’s interests in managing Cauvery water resources. As protests gain momentum, organizers vow to escalate efforts to ensure that Mandya’s farmers are heard and their concerns addressed.

In the face of mounting pressure and impassioned resistance, the struggle for Cauvery water rights in Mandya shows no signs of abating, highlighting the critical importance of water as a resource and the steadfast determination of the local community to protect it at all costs.
