In a major push for environmental restoration, the Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) will revive six key lakes using ₹40 crore collected as lake development cess over the last two years. These funds, previously unused, will now support a large-scale rejuvenation of Mysuru’s vital waterbodies.

The Lake Development Committee, chaired by Deputy Commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy, formally approved the project, allowing MDA to begin work. Among the 13 lakes proposed, Dalvoy Lake—spanning 134 acres near Mandakalli—will receive the lion’s share of ₹15 crore.

Planned improvements at Dalvoy include deep desilting, bund reinforcement, fencing, landscaped pathways, culverts, solar fountains, ornamental lighting, and essential public utilities like rest areas and restrooms.

Additionally, Hinkal Lake (5.9 acres), Huyilalu Lake (13.3 acres), Devanur Lake (12.4 acres), and lakes in Bugathagalli, Vajamangala, and Nadanahalli are each earmarked for ₹5 crore rejuvenation projects.

Work will begin with four lakes initially, pending administrative clearance from the state government, with tenders expected to be floated in the next 2–3 weeks. Restoration tasks will include vegetation clearance, silt removal, fencing, crash barriers, interlocking tile paths, steps, and cattle ramps.

MDA Commissioner KR Rakshit noted that the initiative aims to boost biodiversity, prevent encroachment, and enhance public recreation and bird habitats. Former Karnataka Lakes Conservation Authority member KM Jayaramaiah welcomed the plan, praising the MDA’s proactive use of funds to protect Mysuru’s shrinking water bodies.

Focus is shifting from popular lakes to rapidly urbanising outskirts to preserve natural assets before irreversible damage occurs.
