Udupi: A string of thefts has struck the Kodankur locality in Udupi, targeting houses left unattended, with several incidents reported over the past few days. Burglars have made off with gold, silver, and cash, leaving behind damaged property and growing fear among residents.
One such case involved Shakuntala Shetty, who visits her Kodankur residence once every fortnight. Her neighbour alerted her on July 7 that the house had been broken into. Upon arrival, she discovered the lock broken and gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 1.7 lakh missing. Items stolen included gold earrings, pendants, chains, and silver anklets.
Another burglary occurred at the residence of Ashwath, who lives in Shikaripura. His house, visited occasionally by relatives, was found ransacked on July 6. Thieves stole 7 grams of gold jewellery and Rs 20,000 in cash.
Kalavathi, who left for Bengaluru with her husband on July 5, was informed by neighbours of a break-in the following day. Her Godrej cupboard was damaged, and while a police complaint has been lodged, the extent of the loss is still being determined.
Past incidents across Udupi, including in Moodusagri, Budnar, and even near the city police station, remain unresolved. Lack of proper CCTV coverage is believed to be helping criminals operate with ease.
Preliminary CCTV footage in the Kodankur case points to two masked individuals entering from the main road, likely using the visible padlocks on gates as cues that the homes were vacant.
Authorities urge residents to notify police before traveling, avoid visible padlocks, install CCTV systems, and store valuables in bank lockers. Sharing travel plans on social media is strongly discouraged.
