Udupi – A routine traffic inspection near the Karavali Bypass in Moodanidambur village escalated unexpectedly when a car driver allegedly attacked a police officer and interfered with his duties.
The incident occurred during a vehicle check conducted by Udupi Traffic Police. Sub-Inspector Husseinsab Kashimsab Chapparkar, who filed the complaint, stated that officers flagged down a car coming from Ambalpady toward Karavali Junction after noticing the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
When the officer approached and asked for the driver’s name, address, and driving license, the man allegedly reacted angrily and refused to share any information. Even after being informed that he had been stopped for a seatbelt violation, the driver refused to cooperate and attempted to flee the scene in his car.
Police officers blocked the vehicle’s path, forcing the driver to stop. Upon checking the documents, the driver was identified as Kurien. When officers issued a notice and asked him to sign it, Kurien reportedly declined, then allegedly tried to snatch his license from the sub-inspector’s hand and physically assaulted him.
Following the altercation, Udupi Town Police Station registered a case under Section 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for obstructing a government official from carrying out lawful duties.
The situation highlights growing concerns over public compliance with road safety laws and respect for enforcement personnel.
