Udupi: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a pedestrian, Peer Mohammed, when a speeding car hit him near Koppalangadi on National Highway 66 on Sunday evening.

According to a complaint filed by Mohammed Irshad, the incident occurred while he and Peer Mohammed were walking towards Noorul Huda Madrasa to offer prayers. Peer Mohammed, who lived on the opposite side of the road, was attempting to cross when the accident took place.

Car driven at high speed

Eyewitnesses allege that a black car, reportedly driven in a rash and negligent manner by Mohammed Jasim, struck Peer Mohammed with great force as he reached the road divider. The impact flung the victim onto the car’s bonnet and shattered its windshield before he fell on the road.

Locals and Irshad immediately rushed to his aid, calling for an ambulance and shifting him to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Police register case under BNS

The Kaup Police have registered a case under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and have begun an investigation into the incident. Authorities are expected to verify CCTV footage and question the driver to determine the sequence of events and possible negligence.

Residents of the area have expressed concerns over frequent speeding on this stretch of NH 66, citing the lack of effective monitoring and proper pedestrian crossings. Local organisations have urged the authorities to install speed-control measures and ensure stricter enforcement of traffic rules to prevent further tragedies.
