Mangaluru: Vehicular traffic came to a complete halt on National Highway 75, the key route linking Mangaluru to Bengaluru, after a massive landslide struck Mannagundi near Kaukradi village in Kadaba taluk on Thursday.
The landslip, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, caused large amounts of soil and debris to block the highway, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. Law enforcement officials confirmed that excavation efforts have already begun to remove the heaps of earth dumped across the road.
Despite ongoing soil erosion at the site, authorities are hopeful that the road will be partially accessible by around noon. However, the unstable ground conditions have made clearance operations more challenging and risky for workers.
To ensure commuter safety, the police have advised motorists to avoid using the Shirady Ghat stretch for now. Alternative routes have been recommended for those traveling between Mangaluru and Bengaluru.
This incident follows a pattern of rain-induced disruptions across the region, as the southwest monsoon continues to batter Dakshina Kannada district. Emergency teams and road maintenance crews remain on high alert as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
Commuters are urged to stay updated with traffic advisories and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays and detours.
