Mangaluru: At KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, Mangalore, doctors achieved a rare surgical feat, removing a significantly enlarged kidney in a 52-year-old woman suffering from autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). The patient’s abdomen had enlarged due to both kidneys being affected by this genetic disease.
ADPKD, causing cysts in both kidneys, often leads to complications such as infections, bleeding within the cysts, and renal failure, impacting the patient’s quality of life. The medical team, led by Dr Sanman Gowda, Consultant Urologist, decided to perform a staged removal, starting with the left kidney. The open surgical method was chosen for its effectiveness.
The surgery, carried out by the Urology team, including Dr Sushanth Kumar of Nephrology and Dr Madhusudhan Upadya, with support from the Anaesthesiology department, went smoothly. The patient has since resumed her daily life.
Dr Sanman Gowda highlighted that ADPKD symptoms typically emerge between the ages of 30 and 40, potentially leading to kidney failure. The disease, affecting both genders, can also impact the lungs and liver. Dr Sushanth Kumar explained that mutations in the PKD1 or PKD2 genes cause ADPKD, disrupting normal kidney functions.
Saghir Siddiqui, Regional Chief Operating Officer at KMC Hospital, Mangalore, praised the hospital’s exceptional healthcare services. He emphasized the significance of this rare case, providing valuable insights for future treatments and potentially saving lives.
