The son of Congress stalwart Murli Deora, Milind Deora had previously secured victory in the Mumbai South constituency during the 2004 and 2009 elections. However, he faced defeat in the subsequent polls in 2014 and 2019, finishing as the first runner-up against Shiv Sena (undivided) leader Arvind Sawant.
Deora had recently voiced his discontent with the Uddhav Thackeray faction’s success in winning the Mumbai South seat. The Uddhav Thackeray-led group, Shiv Sena (UBT), is a part of the opposition alliance.
In a video statement released the previous Sunday, Deora warned that if statements from an “alliance partner” persisted, his party might consider announcing candidates for contested seats.
After deliberations with his supporters, Milind Deora ultimately made the decision to sever ties with the Congress party, marking a significant shift in his political allegiance.
